Hello Blogging Friends!!
Welcome to my post for the GIGANTIC "It's A Girl Thing" Turner Syndrome Awareness 2nd Annual Blog Hop!
More than 32 years ago my daughter, Julie, was diagnosed with Turner Syndrome. I found that many doctors were not familiar with TS and for me this is where my journey began. I spent hard days and long nights trying to learn everything I could about TS and how I could help my daughter. Receiving the diagnosis was only the first step on a lifelong path of searching for acceptance and understanding.
TS is a complex condition with ear and hearing issues being one aspect, which Julie faced. She had numerous ear infections and eventually needed surgery to put tubes in her ears. I informed the ENT that TS girls ears were different but the surgery failed ~ a situation that could have been avoided with awareness and education. Without experienced professionals to guide us, making medical decisions for Julie was an ongoing struggle. After this, we decided to commute to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia where the specialists were more familiar with TS.
When Julie was an infant, the geneticist told my husband and me to keep Julie's TS diagnosis a secret because others would treat her differently. I now know that staying silent will not help my daughter, or any girl affected by TS, access the care she needs. Working together to raise a greater awareness encourages the medical field to do much needed research on how TS affects girls and women throughout their lives. This is the reason I started this Turner Syndrome Awareness Blog Hop!! I am very fortunate that the Crafting Community is such a generous community and that so many Companies and Card Designers have joined me to spread awareness!! Please shop at the Sponsors stores and please leave some love on the awesome Card Designers Blogs!!

ReplyDeleteYou have done such and amazing job fighting for your daughter. It is definitely not right to keep quiet about it. She is not someone to be ashamed of.
Both cards are lovely but your 2nd one is my favourite. Love how you have combined the elements to make such a pretty card.
Your cards are beautiful, Lori, as is your Julie! Thank you for sharing this with us, and for fighting so hard for a cure. You are an amazing mom, and friend! Hugs...
ReplyDeleteThese are both beautiful! I really like the second one; it is so sweet and touching! So sorry for you and your daughter for all the struggles you have had to go through; it's unfortunate that the medical community is not as helpful as they should be! Hopefully, your raising awareness about it will help.
ReplyDeleteYour cards are gorgeous! Thank you for making me aware of this condition and hope more are learning about it through this hop.
ReplyDeleteFabulous cards, I love them. Your story are truly inspiring.
ReplyDeleteJust lovely dear...thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteCONGRATULATIONS on your 2nd Turner Syndrome Awareness blog hop Lori!
ReplyDeleteIt is THANKS to YOU and people like you that awareness and understanding of rare disorders is shared and that girls like your daughter Julie are given the best support. This is my second year participating (and learning), there are so many aspects to this genetic disorder that it is almost overwhelming, especially when we remember that less than 2% of babies conceived survive to birth, precious girls that face the challenges each day with their families. Julie is so lucky to have a wonderful Mother like you!
PS - your cards are lovely, especially your gorgeous heart shaped rose!
PS - many years ago I had to learn very quickly about a new-to-me disorder when I was struck down suddenly with chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis. Sadly, over recent weeks, we are learning about Leukaemia, with my sister being diagnosed. I am sorry for not donating today, as we have made donations to the Leukaemia Foundation in support of our niece who is shaving her hair for the World's Greatest Shave next week.
DeleteKeep up your AMAZING work being a voice EDUCATING the world about Turner Syndrome and being an AWESOME Mother!

A lovely card! Thank you for sharing the info on this hop. I had no idea how many girls were affected and the health problems it causes.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful cards for an awesome cause.
ReplyDeleteTS girls are like butterflies-each being so unique in their physical symptoms, medical conditions and social abilities. Thank you for raising awareness.
Beautiful cards, Lori. Thank you for raising awareness. Hopefully more research will be done soon to help Julie and all other TS girls.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Lena
Both of the cards are lovely. I like the heart shaped flower, very appropriate for the Valentine season. The second card touches my heart with the angel wings. It is meaningful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cards, Lori, for a beautiful cause! I am stunned that a geneticist would advise you to keep Julie's diagnosis a secret. Thank God that you took matters into your own hands and found Julie the help she needed! You are amazing and I know you have hard days, but you are there for your precious daughter. Your labor is not in vain. Your hard work is noticed and will be rewarded.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this important hop. I hopped with you last year, but I had forgotten that 99% of conceptions with Turner Syndrome do not survive until birth. Wow...these precious Turner Syndrome gals really are miracles!! Many blessings to you and your beautiful daughter!!!
